US may move another 50 troops from Poland to Lithuania

According to Militarnyi, preparations are under way to move US troops, while Lithuania is offering a permanent facility for US forces. If the plan is confirmed, it would represent a redistribution of personnel, not necessarily an increase in the US presence in Europe.

Militarnyi, a Ukrainian military news website, reports plans to move another 50 US troops from Poland to Lithuania. So far, it is the only outlet to have reported the plans. At the time of publication, Flank has found no independent confirmation.

Lithuania offers a permanent facility for US forces

According to Militarnyi, Lithuania’s Ministry of Defence has prepared proposals for the US side for a permanent facility for US forces and is ready to cover its maintenance costs. At the time of publication, Flank has found no official ministry statement on the proposal or the troop transfer.

The infrastructure proposal does not mean that construction has been approved or that a decision has been taken to base troops permanently. Militarnyi’s report does not specify whether the US side has accepted the proposal, where the facility would be or what its purpose would be.

Redistributing forces between allies

If confirmed, the transfer would redistribute US personnel between two countries on NATO’s eastern flank. It would not, in itself, mean an increase in the overall US contingent in Europe.

In Flank’s assessment, the figure of 50 personnel is not enough to judge the military impact. That depends on the unit, the personnel’s specialisms, their equipment and their tasks. The reported number alone does not support a conclusion that the US presence in Poland would be significantly weakened.

No timeframe or specific destination has been given for the possible transfer, nor has it been stated whether this would be a rotation or a longer-term deployment. Militarnyi’s use of the word “another” does not establish either the size of any previous transfer or the total number of US forces in Lithuania.
