Finnish military reportedly demonstrates joint mission by maritime and aerial uncrewed systems
The only media report so far describes three uncrewed platforms operating together at Upinniemi. According to the report, the demonstration was accompanied by a plan to establish a dedicated company in 2027.

The Finnish Defence Forces demonstrated maritime and aerial uncrewed systems operating together on 5 November 2026 at Upinniemi, according to the European defence magazine European Defence Review (EDR). According to the publication, the event was organised by the Finnish Navy, and the systems were developed by Finnish defence company Patria. EDR Magazine is the sole source of the information. At the time of publication, Flank had found no independent confirmation.
Three platforms on a joint mission, but no details on autonomy
According to EDR Magazine, the demonstration involved an uncrewed surface vessel fitted with Patria's autonomy kit, a light fixed-wing uncrewed aircraft and a Patria ONE quadcopter. The publication reports that the platforms carried out a joint mission.
The report does not specify the tasks assigned to individual platforms, how they exchanged data or the degree of human control. Nor does it provide technical results that would allow an assessment of performance under interference or loss of communications.
The joint mission itself does not demonstrate autonomous group behaviour. The surface vessel's autonomy kit also does not necessarily mean that the entire operation can be carried out without operator intervention. The demonstration as described is therefore insufficient to draw conclusions about the systems' combat readiness.
Coastal Brigade plans an uncrewed systems company
According to EDR Magazine, it was announced at the event that an uncrewed systems company would be established within the Coastal Brigade from the start of 2027. This is a future organisational plan, not a unit already in operation.
In a statement quoted by the publication, the Finnish Navy says it intends to integrate uncrewed systems both into standalone units and into existing formations and warships.
In Flank's assessment, the most significant point is that the report links the demonstration to a planned military structure. If the company is established, it could provide a setting for training, testing and developing procedures for operating the platforms together. Whether this translates into an operational capability will depend on the equipment, tasks and results of subsequent trials.
