On 4 November 2026, Romania scrambled two F-16 fighter jets from the 86th Borcea Air Base after military radars detected an aerial target north of the Ukrainian town of Vylkove, near the Romanian border. Romania’s Ministry of National Defence announced this, as reported by BTA. According to the ministry, no incursions into Romanian airspace were recorded. Flank had not found independent confirmation of the operational details at the time of publication. This is a developing story and further information may be added.

Warning in Tulcea and air policing duties

At 10:57, BTA reported, citing the ministry, that at 10:57 local time the RO-Alert system had warned residents in northern Tulcea County of the risk of drones entering the area. The message also advised people to seek shelter.

This time refers to the public warning, not the take-off of the two F-16s. The aircraft were carrying out air policing duties.

According to information from Romania’s Ministry of National Defence, cited by BTA, two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled after an aerial target was detected over Ukrainian territory, near the border with Romania. No violation of Romanian airspace was established. Residents in northern Tulcea County were nevertheless alerted through RO-Alert to the risk of drones entering the area. However, the available information does not allow an assessment of how immediate the danger was.

Target not identified as a drone

In the information released by the ministry, the object is described as an “aerial target”. The warning of a possible drone incursion does not in itself establish what the object was. Its origin and operator remain unspecified, and there is no basis for describing it as Russian or Ukrainian.

There has been no report of whether the pilots visually identified or escorted the target, or whether weapons were used. The scrambling of the fighter jets should therefore not be presented as a confirmed interception or downing of the target.

For Bulgaria, the incident has regional significance: it concerns the air security of a neighbouring allied country near the Danube Delta. No direct threat to Bulgarian territory has been reported.
