Three allied surveillance aircraft reportedly tracked simultaneously over the Black Sea

According to media reports, Italian, British and US aircraft flew simultaneously over the Black Sea on 3 November. The British aircraft was east of the Bulgarian coast. The reports originate from a single source and do not confirm a joint NATO operation.

Three Italian, British and US surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft were reportedly tracked simultaneously over the Black Sea on 3 November 2026, according to bTV News and BurgasMedia. bTV cites the specialist website ItaMilRadar as its source. The two reports do not constitute independent confirmation: the information comes from a single source, and Flank had found no independent confirmation of the flights at the time of publication.

The three aircraft and their reported routes

According to bTV and BurgasMedia, the Italian Gulfstream E.550 CAEW, registration MM62293, took off from Pratica di Mare Air Base. BurgasMedia reports that the aircraft monitored the Danube Delta area and headed towards the Romanian coast.

The British Boeing RC-135W Rivet Joint, registration ZZ664, took off from Waddington, both outlets report. According to BurgasMedia, the British aircraft flew a route east of the Bulgarian coast. That description does not in itself imply entry into Bulgarian airspace.

The US Bombardier CL-600 ARTEMIS II, registration N159L, took off from Constanța, both outlets state. According to BurgasMedia, the aircraft set out on another surveillance mission over the western Black Sea.

Three different surveillance platforms

BurgasMedia describes the Italian E.550 CAEW as an airborne early warning and electronic surveillance aircraft, the British RC-135W as specialising in signals intelligence, and the US ARTEMIS II as an intelligence and surveillance platform.

In Flank’s assessment, if their simultaneous presence is confirmed, the military significance would lie in the potential for their capabilities to complement one another, rather than simply in the number of aircraft. This is a possible effect of combining such platforms, but it does not prove that information was exchanged or a joint task carried out during these particular flights.

The fact that the aircraft belong to NATO member states likewise does not prove that the flights were under Alliance command.

Coordination and increased flight activity remain unconfirmed

bTV explicitly notes that a link between the flights has not been confirmed. There are no independently verified records of the precise routes or their overlap in time, nor any official confirmation of their missions. No involvement of Bulgarian forces or use of Bulgarian bases has been established.

BurgasMedia relays the specialist website’s assessment that the simultaneous presence of the three aircraft is unusual. Without comparable information on the frequency of previous flights, this is insufficient to conclude that intelligence-gathering activity is increasing. The report also provides no basis for concluding that a combat operation is being prepared or that there is an immediate threat.
