Research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii sets sail on fifth mission to Antarctica

Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii will supply the Bulgarian base on Livingston Island and support scientific work. The departure is reported in an article on Armymedia.bg credited to the Ministry of Defence Information Centre. DarikNews.bg republishes a BTA report citing the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy on the forthcoming departure on 4 November 2026, while Euronews Bulgaria gives the expedition’s previously announced start date in an interview with its leader, Hristo Pimpirev; these two sources do not verify that the vessel has actually departed.

The research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (NIK 421 / RSV 421) will set sail on 4 November 2026 on its fifth expedition to Antarctica, the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy in Varna announced. BTA quotes the announcement in a report published by DarikNews.bg. At the time of publication, Flank has found no independent confirmation that the vessel has already departed.

Cargo and the forthcoming Drake Passage crossing

According to the Ministry of Defence Information Centre, the vessel is carrying hundreds of tonnes of provisions, construction materials, fuel and scientific equipment for the Bulgarian polar team. The announcement also states that the vessel is due to cross the Drake Passage.

A BTA report republished by DarikNews.bg, citing the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy, says the vessel will support the Bulgarian polar expedition and scientific activities at the St Kliment Ohridski base on Livingston Island. The report schedules the departure for 4 November and the departure ceremony for 12:00 at Varna’s passenger terminal. The announcement concerns a forthcoming departure, rather than confirming that it has already taken place.

Underwater archaeology among the planned tasks

In an interview with Euronews Bulgaria on 22 October, expedition leader Professor Hristo Pimpirev gives 4 November as the start date of the 35th Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition. Among the planned activities, he mentions underwater archaeology involving divers and a specialised underwater vehicle.

This is a scientific task announced in advance, not an account of work already completed. The fifth mission refers to RSV 421’s voyages, while the 35th expedition is the latest season of the Bulgarian Antarctic programme — the two numbers refer to different things.

Mission continues resupply effort but does not prove self-sufficiency

In Flank’s assessment, the key significance of this latest mission is the continuation of maritime resupply: the fuel, materials and equipment provide the conditions needed for work at the base. The stated tasks are scientific and logistical, not combat-related.

However, the fifth successive voyage does not in itself demonstrate an expansion of the scientific programme or full logistical self-sufficiency. The Ministry of Defence Information Centre’s description of the operation as “fully independent” is not supported by details of resupply en route and port services. The mission will be judged on the cargo delivered and the scientific tasks completed, not simply on its departure.
