Tank container trapped near Sinemorets as other containers remain under observation

According to the regional governor of Burgas, rough seas are preventing the tank container from being recovered from the rocks. Reports differ on the number of objects, while the contents of some are still being established.

A tank container remains trapped among rocks near Sinemorets, where it ended up late on 2 November. Burgas Regional Governor Diko Dikov told BNR Burgas this on 3 November 2026. NOVA also carried a statement by Dikov about the tank container. Separately, Mediapool reports three freely drifting containers near Bulgaria, but Flank had found no independent confirmation of their exact number and condition at the time of publication. This is a developing story and further information may be added.

Rough seas delay recovery of the tank container

Dikov told BNR Burgas that the tank container is trapped against the rocks in the Korabite area near Sinemorets. The sea is rougher than the previous day, preventing its recovery. Speaking to NOVA, the regional governor also said the operation would wait for the weather to settle.

According to Dikov, the container near Arapya has been secured to the rocks and is being guarded. BNR Burgas also reports another container, half-submerged about a kilometre offshore near Sinemorets. According to information from the regional administration cited by the radio station, its movement is being monitored by the Border Police and the Maritime Administration.

These reports do not describe three freely drifting objects: the tank container is trapped, while the container near Arapya has been secured against the rocks. BNR Burgas mentions four objects in total, and in its updated report, three under observation. The figures given therefore cannot be taken as the total number of containers still drifting.

Contents of the tank container and another container still being established

Dikov told BNR Burgas that there were no visible signs of hazardous substances leaking from the tank container and that, in his assessment, it was most likely empty. He said water samples would be taken. NOVA carries a more categorical assurance from him that the tank container is empty and there is no risk of pollution.

Mediapool reports that the tank container that reached the Bulgarian coast turned out to be empty. This does not, however, mean that the contents of all the objects have been established. According to NOVA, the cargo in the other container approaching Sinemorets has yet to be identified using its identification number. The final assessment of the environmental risk depends on inspections and sample results.

Container locations are critical for shipping

Freely drifting and partially submerged containers pose a collision hazard. Assessing the risk requires knowing not just how many there are, but also which are still moving, where they are and whether they can be recovered safely. Without precise positions and information on their movements, the risk to specific shipping routes cannot be determined.

NOVA reports that the containers are part of the cargo of Contship Jet, which sank off Shabla in late October. BNR Burgas also reports objects drifting south of Burgas following the ship’s sinking on 29 October. This link has been reported by the media; identifying the individual containers remains important both for establishing their cargo and for determining their origin.
