Turkish defence technology company HAVELSAN reports test of uncrewed surface vessel with armed aerial drone

According to the company statement, SAGAN took off autonomously from the USV-12 surface vessel and dropped a 60 mm mortar round under operator control. The demonstration shows shared control of two uncrewed platforms but does not establish their combat effectiveness.

Turkish defence technology company HAVELSAN reports a demonstration in which the USV-12 uncrewed surface vessel served as a carrier for an armed SAGAN aerial drone. Specialist naval publication Naval News published the company statement on 20 October 2026. It gives no date or location for the test. The account has also been published by other media outlets but originates with the company. At the time of publication, Flank has found no independent confirmation of the demonstration's execution or results.

Movement and take-off are autonomous, while the weapon remains under human control

According to HAVELSAN's statement, USV-12 was built by VN MARITIME, while SAGAN was developed by ASİSGUARD. The company describes the surface vessel's autonomous movement and the aerial drone's autonomous take-off from it. According to the company, SAGAN dropped a 60 mm mortar round on a designated target, with weapon use under operator control.

HAVELSAN says it provides command and control, mission management and autonomous functions. This is not a description of a fully autonomous strike sequence: autonomous movement and take-off are separate from the decision to use a weapon.

On 8 November, Armymedia.bg reported that SAGAN had taken off from the deck while the vessel was moving and had “fired” a mortar round. In Naval News, the company's account refers more specifically to dropping a munition. The distinction matters because the reports do not establish that a firing system is fitted to the drone.

The maritime carrier could move the starting point of the aerial mission

In Flank's assessment, the potential military benefit comes from combining a mobile maritime platform with an aerial strike asset. In such an arrangement, the flight's starting point can be moved by sea without a crew aboard the surface carrier. This does not remove dependence on an operator, communications and target designation.

HAVELSAN says it connects systems from different manufacturers through a common command-and-control architecture. The practical value of this approach depends on repeatable deck take-offs, operation in waves and the resilience of communications links to jamming. The demonstration described does not, on its own, allow these parameters to be assessed or establish that the combination is ready for combat use.

The reports do not say when or where the demonstration took place

Haber Aero published the same company account as early as 12 October 2026, before the Naval News article. Consequently, 8 November, when the Armymedia.bg article appeared, should not be taken as the date of the test. The accounts provide no specific location, measured accuracy or data on the effect on the target. The company's claim that the mission was completed successfully is not equivalent to an independently verified hit or damage.

On 5 November, German defence magazine European Security & Defence (ESD) also published a later HAVELSAN statement about USV-12 and SAGAN in exercise TURNAs-2026. According to the article, SAGAN fired a 60 mm mortar round at a target. It does not specify what the target was or whether it was hit. This episode cannot automatically be treated as the same event as the earlier demonstration and does not establish what munition was used in that demonstration.
