On 3 November 2026 Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov and Chief of Defence Admiral Emil Eftimov welcomed the first assembled Stryker combat vehicles for the Land Forces at a ceremony at the Terem plant in Veliko Tarnovo, BTA reported. The first eight vehicles have been assembled, and five of them have already been handed over to the 1st Mechanized Brigade in Karlovo. Earlier that morning 24 Chasa and Varna24 had reported the planned acceptance; 24 Chasa names the facility as Terem–Ivaylo.

The contract covers 183 vehicles, and its value has been revised

The contract covers 183 Stryker-family combat vehicles, BTA reports; 24 Chasa and Varna24 give the same number.

According to 24 Chasa, the initial value was $1.37 billion, and parliament approved an increase of around $40 million in the summer. Varna24 puts the total value following the revision at around $1.41 billion. The figures are arithmetically consistent, but Flank has not verified the final sum against the contract or the decision approving the revision.

Assembly in Bulgaria and potential for a regional service centre

According to 24 Chasa, the vehicles are being assembled and fitted out at Terem–Ivaylo. The publication also cites Bulgarian National Radio for a statement by Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov that the factory has the infrastructure and expertise to establish itself as a regional service centre for Strykers.

This stated prospect must be distinguished from an established repair capability. Local assembly may build technical experience, but does not in itself mean a capability to carry out full repairs or independence from external supplies of parts.

What else is needed for combat readiness

In Flank’s assessment, the acceptance is an important step towards bringing the new equipment into service, but does not demonstrate that a combat unit is ready. Physical delivery, technical acceptance and the unit’s preparation are separate stages.

Assessing the actual contribution to the Bulgarian Land Forces requires information on the variants and equipment of the first vehicles, crew training, and provision for maintenance and spare parts. The variants and equipment of the first vehicles and the schedule for the remaining deliveries remain unspecified.

This is a developing story: Flank will add to it when the vehicles’ variants and the schedule for the remaining deliveries are announced.
