3rd Mechanised Battalion conducts Eagle Strike 26 live-fire exercise at Koren

The exercise involves land formations and forces from the air bases at Bezmer and Krumovo. This training will be followed by Pirin Guard 26. That exercise will focus on a mechanised brigade and its role in a joint defensive operation.

The 3rd Mechanised Battalion of the Blagoevgrad-based 3rd Brigade Command is conducting the Eagle Strike 26 tactical live-fire exercise at the Koren training area from 3 to 5 November, the Ministry of Defence announced on 4 November through BTA and other media. Information on the progress of the exercise comes from the ministry and its information centre; Flank had found no independent confirmation at the time of publication. The exercise is ongoing, and further information may be added.

Artillery, engineers and aviation support the battalion

The Ministry of Defence lists personnel from four formations among those taking part in the training: the Sliven-based 13th Brigade Command, the Asenovgrad-based 4th Artillery Regiment, the Belene-based 55th Engineer Regiment and the Plovdiv-based 110th Logistics Regiment. The announcement was carried by BTA, Darik and 24 Chasa. The Musachevo-based 38th Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Protection and Ecology Battalion is also involved.

The ministry also says that forces and assets from the 22nd and 24th Air Bases at Bezmer and Krumovo are taking part. The specific aviation tasks, aircraft used and number of participants have not been announced.

The march and decontamination site in the exercise scenario

A report by the Ministry of Defence Information Centre, published by Armymedia on 3 November, describes a march from deployment areas to the concentration area. According to the report, this part of the training tests the command and organisational skills of the mechanised battalion's commanders.

The commander of the 3rd Brigade Command, Colonel Kiril Spanevikov, told the publication that many of the officers appointed as company commanders had been in their posts for about a month. He described coordination between the formations as a challenge for them.

According to the same report, the exercise scenario includes a simulated tactical nuclear strike on the battalion's positions, after which specialist forces from Musachevo set up a decontamination site. This is an exercise serial, not a report of an actual incident.

From battalion training to a brigade-level exercise

The Ministry of Defence describes Eagle Strike 26 as preparation for Pirin Guard 26. The next exercise will examine how a mechanised brigade operates as part of the Land Component in a joint defensive operation — its announced theme. According to Armymedia, the principal training audience will be the headquarters of the 3rd Brigade Command and its subordinate formations.

In Flank's assessment, the practical value of this sequence lies in the opportunity to practise coordination between the battalion and its attached forces before brigade-level training. The participation of different formations does not, however, in itself prove that coordination was successful.

The Ministry of Defence reports difficult weather conditions and the completion of assigned tasks. This is an interim official assessment, not a final result for the exercise as a whole: at the time of the 4 November announcement, its scheduled duration had not yet elapsed. No measurable live-fire results or identified shortcomings have been disclosed that would allow an assessment of the level of training achieved.
