Italian E.550 CAEW reportedly flies off Romanian coast

According to Itamilradar, an Italian airborne early warning and control aircraft flew near Constanța on 26 October. The report draws attention to aerial surveillance over the western Black Sea, but neither the flight nor its mission has been independently confirmed.

On 26 October, an Italian Gulfstream E.550 CAEW returned to the western Black Sea and operated off the Romanian coast, according to Defense Romania and Itamilradar. It has not been established whether the two reports are based on independent observations. At the time of publication, Flank had found no independent confirmation of the flight.

Reported route passes near Constanța

According to Itamilradar, the aircraft, registration MM62293, took off from Italy’s Pratica di Mare Air Base using the callsign IAM1495. The source describes a surveillance route near Constanța. Defense Romania also reports that an Italian Air Force Gulfstream E.550 CAEW operated off the Romanian coast on 26 October.

Itamilradar presents the flight as a return after a period of absence. However, it provides neither a duration nor a complete series of observations, so it cannot be concluded that missions had actually been interrupted.

Surveillance and coordination, not just patrolling

According to Itamilradar’s technical description, the E.550 CAEW combines radar and electronic surveillance with capabilities to build a consolidated air picture and support the coordination of other aircraft. This describes the aircraft’s capabilities, but does not establish which of them were used during the reported flight.

In Flank’s assessment, the significance of such a mission for the western Black Sea would lie in combining surveillance with support for air operations. For Bulgaria, the connection is geographical: the area is off neighbouring Romania. The reported route does not establish that the aircraft monitored Bulgarian airspace or provided information to Bulgarian bodies.

The flight’s mission has not been established

The Italian and Romanian military authorities have not confirmed the flight, and there has been no independent verification. It has not been established whether it was carrying out an Italian national task, a NATO mission or operating under another arrangement, nor what targets were being monitored.

Proximity to the maritime approaches to Ukrainian ports does not prove that the mission was to protect traffic bound for Ukraine. A single report is also insufficient to conclude that there has been an increased military presence or a change in operational readiness.
