French ambassador: France to take over air defence around Rzeszów from 1 January

The announced plan would see French systems defend the Polish airport that is key to aid deliveries to Ukraine alongside US Patriot systems. The year of the start date and the mission’s duration remain unspecified.

France will take over air defence around the airport in Rzeszów, Poland, from 1 January as part of a NATO mission, according to the French ambassador in Warsaw, Étienne de Poncins. His statement was quoted by Armymedia.bg and DarikNews.bg in reports dated 6 November 2026, citing BTA and Reuters. Both reports follow a single reporting chain, and Flank had found no independent confirmation at the time of publication.

Protecting the aid route to Ukraine

Western aid to Ukraine passes mainly through Rzeszów airport, Reuters says in a report distributed by BTA. The significance of the announced task stems from this logistical role: disruption to airport operations could hamper deliveries along this route.

According to the quoted statement, French responsibility will cover the Rzeszów area, not air defence across the whole of Poland. The ambassador describes the use of French equipment for this particular task as a first.

French systems to operate alongside US Patriot systems

De Poncins says French systems and US Patriot systems will jointly provide air defence. The ambassador says this will allow their interoperability, meaning their ability to carry out a shared task, to be tested.

In the same report, the agency also notes Swedish plans to deploy systems the following month. At the time covered by the report, protection of the airport is entrusted to Dutch Patriot systems. This information does not mean that the four national contributions will necessarily overlap. The planned joint operations also do not demonstrate that technical integration has already been achieved.

Mission’s start year, composition and duration remain unspecified

The quoted statement gives the start date as 1 January, without specifying a year. The type and number of French systems, the size of the contingent and the command arrangements are not specified. According to the reports, the ambassador also did not specify the mission’s duration.

For now, this is an announced plan, not a confirmed deployment. Further information may become available when the schedule and participating forces are officially clarified.

US approves potential sale of 500 Patriot missiles to Ukraine

The proposal, worth around $2.1 billion, envisages financing without US funds. Approval is not a delivery contract, however, and Zelensky is pressing for missiles from existing stocks to be provided for the coming winter.
